"What do you mean by "Packet Writing software/drivers"?
Can you explain and provide what programs, or whatever these are please?"
Probably the 3 most used are DLA (from Veritas), InCD (from Ahead/Nero), and DirectCD (from Roxio/Adaptec).
It's software that allows appendable, drag & drop access to your media.
In laymans terms: software that lets you use your media like huge floppy disks :-)

One issue that I ran into...
The first DVD I tried to backup with dxc was just a test -- I had already been successfull making a backup with other software since it is a single layer disc. Try as I might I would get a disc which would play on my computer but would give the message "Cannot play this disc" when tried on my Sony NS315. I could turn around and use the alternate means of backing it up onto the same RW disc and it worked just fine on both. Lo and behold the region on my writer had never been set because I had never inserted a movie DVD into it. Once I set the region on the writer the discs started playing on my NS315!

Having read thru many of these threads and finding that some people can use the GEAR drivers and some people can't. I don't understand what the particular drivers or burn engine have to do with why a disk works or not. I thought that there was a certain standard for making a dvd that works for playing movies and that if that standard was adhered to, they worked. So why is there a difference between a disk burned with GEAR engine and the NERO engine?

Hello everyone, I am brand new to this forum and to DXC. I am an idiot when it comes to getting programs to work so I am just going to lay out my problem. When I click on the copy now it previews my DVD. That part works fine, but when it comes to the next screen where I would actually start to burn it, it doesn't work. It is recognizing my D drive and the dvd in it, but it has that red dot on the target drive. I am using a NEC DVD+RW ND1100-A(it came with my dell computer). I am currently running Norton Antivirus, and I have Roxio CD creator. I also just realized that i am using "DVD-R" discs, and not "DVD+R" discs; might this be the problem? Could someone please guide me through what to do. Thank you so much for your help!

Well I got some DVD+RW discs, and it is still giving me the same message. After previewing it says "Unable to initialize the recorder driver or recorder interface", you click ok and then it says "Can’t find dvd drive info". What do I do?

Have you played a dvd movie in the drive yet? Try that before using DXC. Let the list know the results.

Aether,
You should disable Norton AV while you are trying to burn. Also there have been known issues with DXC and Roxio CD Creator, you should uninstall it (you can always re-install it if it doesn't fix your problem).
One other thing you may want to do is download the ForceAspi program and run it to install aspi v4.60 This helped a lot of people in the "early days" of DXC. You can get it here:

I have EZCD Creator and NAV installed also with no problems backing up DVD's.Have you tried copying files to the +RW with your EZCD Creator or just watching a movie on your P.C? This would potientially eliminate a bad drive. When 1.41 was released I had problem copying to +RW disk(errors) tried +R and no errors.I am using the HP200i which only supports +R media. Are you using Nero or Gear?

Yeah I've played movies on it and I've made audio CD's with it. Maybe I'll try the +R's.

Just a note to everyone. Switching to the latest version of Nero 551015 solved a problem I was having using an external drive connected to Firewire. XCopy would only allow me to burn to +RW and not +R disks. Even the last rev. of nero didn't work. With the lastest update to Nero we are back in business.
Mag66 this question is for you or anyone that may know the answer....which Ver. of Nero is going to be included in 1.5?
<No idea I'm afraid.. but usually it is a very recent version.. hopefully the latest one given what you said.. >

Aether, re: " but it has that red dot on the target drive " . The only time I have ever seen a RED DOT in DXC is when the target drive I am backing up my movie to does not have enough room . The drive has 3 GB`s of free space and DXC needs 4.2 GB`s. Sounds like you have to choose another drive as your destination or you need to free up some space.

None of that worked. 72morgan, for some reason when I go into the properties of my burner, it says that there is no free space, and no used space. It all reads 0 bytes. What does that mean?

Aether,
Tell us more about your setup. What drives do you have and on what controllers? How much free space is on your harddrive? What software besides DXC uses your cd and/or dvd drives? What OS? W98? XP? How much memory, etc.

You mentioned that you have EZCD Creator on your P.C. Roxio has drive compatibilty update for newer drives since release of their Platinum Edition.Don't now if there might be some conflict here or not. When I updated my CD burner I had to do this as it was not recogized, they also have list of DVD drives also.Just check your ver. & update it,if you have not already. This link should take you to NEC.

Aether , I am confused !!
for some reason when I go into the properties of my burner, it says that there is no free space, and no used space. It all reads 0 bytes. What does that mean? Why are you doing this ?? A brand new Dvd + or - R will have 0 Bytes on it until you burn something to it . Again ,the only time I ever saw a RED DOT in DXC was when I tried to Back up a movie to a drive that did not have enough space. It was after I was not able to copy it to my drive that I noticed the RED DOT and realized my drive did not have enough space. You may have filled up your drive with partial copies depending on where you were saving your DXC files.

I have about 90gigabytes of free space on my HD, and I'm using W-XP. How do you format the discs?

I use EZCD Platinum , it has DVD capabilities. The datadvd project button will take you to a screen that has a drop down menu, click on disc , then erase disc , then I usually choose quick erase for my Dvd+RW`s and it will format the disc in around 15 seconds. This is NOT for Dvd+R`s ONLY RW`s.

That didn't work, but I think that we might be getting somewhere because this time it only gave me one message instead of two and it said "Can't find DVD drive info". When it went to the burning screen, the dot was green this time, but I still couldn't select my burner. Any ideas?

Aether,
""Can't find DVD drive info""
Did you try installing aspi v4.60 with the forceaspi program that I mentioned earlier?
