Had to reformat the harddisk?

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this forum about making backups? ;-)

Why didn't you make a complete backup and a windows recovery disk... boot into the recovery console, recover the registry, uninstall all DVDxCopy programs, and then do a full restore including system state using the backup file you made earlier (and burned to a DVD hopefully) saving yourself the reformat, drink a beer, reinstall OS, drink a beer, reload programs, drink a beer, swear a little, ...

I imagine that you will be doing these soon to save future headaches.

I do recommend that you completely uninstall the Gold version, reboot, install the platinum in its own directory, and then go ahead and instal the Gold version into a different directory altogether. This way, you'll get the latest Gear drivers, but each program will operate separately from each other.

It's seems to me that the programs run a little more stable on Windoes 2000 platform than on Windoes ME. I suppose the same would be true of Win-XP-HE. (I do know that the preview title does not work in ME)

Personally I have been using the Gold version mostly - because it has been meeting my needs.

Your hang problem is strange though. What kind of temps is you machine running when it hangs? (or do you know?) If you machine feels or smells a little hot, you are probably having heat problems. The reason I am thinking this way is that it oes not hang at any specific spot - like at the change from read to write processes - just somewhere in the middle of an operation. Sounds like hardware rather than software. I would throw an extra fan on it, or just open the case and put one of those little one blowing into it for a trial run.

You'd be surprised what a few degrees will do to momory or a processor with regards to stability.

OK , this is what I do over the weekend.

1) Re-format my WD 80gb harddisk.
2) Re-installed Win XP Home Edition.
3) Installed Video and Sound card drivers.
3) Installed Nero burning rom software.
4) Installed DXC Gold 3.0.1

DVD Writer is TDK DVDRW 0404N (OEM of NEC ND-1300A)- Firmware 1.08 (latest).
DVD-Rom is Liteon.
DVD Movies disc for test clone - DareDevil (Code 1)

1) DXC - Select Gear Burn Engine , completed copy into temp. folder of harddisk but failed to detect TDK DVD Writer , so cannot proceed to burn.

2) DXC - Select Nero Burn Engine (not check the UDF box , must I check this box?) , completed copy into temp. folder of harddisk and continue to burn into two disc (here I use DVD+RW blank disc). Completed burning , disc cannot playback in stand alone DVD player (message display on screen said it not compatible format) but can playback in computer.

3) DXC Express - Completed copy info folder but failed to burn (hanged) , restart computer and launch Nero software to complete burn the DVD data. Beautiful ... can playback on stand alone DVD player.

Questions hope to have answer : -

1) When you do Drive select , any drive pop-up for your selection ?
2) Any other thing that I can do so that DXC can detect the TDK DVD Writer ?

There's a program in your DVDxCopy program folder called "DriveSelect"

Run that and then select your drive. Then you should be able to burn with DXC since it should see your drive.

If that doesn't help, I would say that you might want to try to use your device manager to remove the drive, reboot, and let PnP reinstall the drive. Re-run "DriveSelect" ...

Since the other programs see it, it is a software prob, rather than hardware. Play with your system a little to get DXC to see it...

You might have to uninstall DXC and all gear drivers completely, remove the drive from device manager, reboot and let PNP reinstall drive, then run DXC install.

Also (I know this sounds stupid) looking at the order of your install, I would have installed DXC first, then Nero, then sound and video drivers... sometimes it makes a difference.

All else fails - call tech support. See if they will show you how to swap out a couple of the .dll files from an older version. Maybe one of the older engines works better with the drive. I know for certain that the 2.5 engine worked fine with that drive.

Also - you have any other OS discs that you can use? 2000 pro/server/advanced server? (naturally liscensed to you...)

I have an NEC ND1300 and DVD Xcopy works fine for me. I use TDK DVD-R 2X discs - just happen to be the first ones I bought so have not tried anything else yet. DVDXcopy does at times give me an error saying "disc is not writeable" when I go to burn but all I have to do is eject the disc and load the same disc in the drive and click to start the burn and it works.

Seems like it has to do with the timing of how fast you click on the program to start burning after you load the disc....

As info..

This is what I do to get -R copies:
I would first xcopy to +RW media. Then using another program (SpeedyCD), I would copy it to -R media.
[Why the workaround? The DVD on my laptop reads only -R media].
Never can get DVD X copy to write to -R media. Always get some weird SCSI error message.

I have a writer using the NEC-1300A drivers and havn't had a problem writing anything with DVD X Copy Express ver. 2.5.0 and Fuji +R and Memorex +R. However, when I tried using DVD X Copy ver. 1.5.2 for burning an eposodic disc which could fit on one blank it burned it to the +R discs but the only DVD player in my house (I have 5 others besides my burner) that would recognize it was my burner. So I burned a copy without changing any settings to a Memorex +RW disc and it plays on all my players. I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions.

1. My regular DVD player has no problem with +R or +RW. Its a pretty new DVD, less than 3 months old. How old are your DVD's.
2. I have no problem with DXC writing to +R or +RW. It just would not write to -R. I did not try -RW.
3. My workaround is my previous posting.
Good luck.
