Ok.. this subject has risen it's head repeatedly so here is the basic explaination for how/why this occurs.

Such things as the wrong subtitle or the wrong Audio track being played are due to Player/DVD issues.. more than anything else.

Here is a explaination as to why..

Ref: Audiotracks

Most DVD players play certain audiotracks by default. For example;

Audio Track - 1 = DD:5.1 English
Audio Track - 2 = Stereo
Audio Track - 3 = DD:5.1 French
Audio Track - 4 = Director's Commentary
Audio Track - 5 = DTS

Most players default to Audio Track 1 unless the user changes the Audio track via the DVD's Menu or, as in the case of the Sony 715p for example, the User can setup the DVD Player to automatically select a specific type of Audio track each and every time a DVD is inserted. Mine is set to the following order.. DTS, DD:5.1 and then DD Surround.

Some players however have weird ways of selecting the default Audio track. For example, some Apexs choose by default the last Audio Track which usually is DTS so unless you can change it via a DVD's Menu (which is normally the case with retail DVDs) and unless you have a DTS decoder.. you won't here anything at all!

Ok.. so far so good?

Now the next problem..

Some DVD's do not follow the normal Default settings... For example,

Audio Track - 1 = DD:Surround
Audio Track - 2 = DD:5.1
Audio Track - 3 = Director's Commentary

So in this case, the default setting is DD Surround and not DD:5.1 which the player expects. Again, if the User doesn't change the default by either the DVD's menu or the DVD Player's Setup.. then the user will only hear DD:Surround instead of the DD:5.1 he/she would normally expect.

So, here is the 'catch' with DXC and this situation that can affect some Users....

Whenever you take out one DVD and replace it with another, almost all players 'forget' the settings from the previous DVD and reset themselves back to their default settings.

As DXC normally produces 2 DVDs to backup a single DVD, the user selects the right Audio Track from the menu for disk 1 but then when he/she puts in disk 2 and if he/she did not tell DXC to "start with menu' for Disk 2 then the wrong Audio track can be played back instead of the one the User originally selected. The nost common example of this is Users who report that they don't get any Audio with Disk 2 when in fact what has usually happened is that the DVD or their Player, has defaulted to the DTS Audio track and if they don't have a DTS decoder.. then all they do here is silence until they find a way of changing Audio tracks back to what they originally selected.. say, DD:5.1

Ok.. now some DVDs allow the user to select Audio tracks 'on the fly' by means of the remote control... and so its a fairly easy task to quickly change Audio for those DVDs *but* quite a few DVDs 'prohibit' such Audio Changes making it a real PITA to change unless you burn the DVD using the "Start with Menu" option for Disk 2 which tends to resolve all such issues but does of course have it's own negatives such as the delays between the end of Disk 1 and the start of Disk 2 which can and does annoy some Users!

Everything stated above can also apply to Subtitles.. Just replace Audio Track by Subtitle and you will see how that works the same way too.

Also, it has been noted that some players.. and my Sony Sava D900 is one of them.. sometimes chooses the wrong Audio Track almost at random.. Its like it looks at the IFO and sometimes it gets it right and sometimes it gets it wrong.. depending on how well the IFO was originally written. Trust me, there are a lot of IFO's out there that are badly written or got glaring errors in them.. or are simply 'botch jobs' to make up for some bad authoring with the original DVD layout. ST:TNG Boxed set is one example where one part of one episode was found to be referenced by a part of the IFO which was totally seperate to the original part which played that episode. Its almost like they accidently missed a bit of that episode off the DVD so they had to quickly re-add it in and the do a quick "Fixit" for the IFO so it would play it in the right sequence with the rest of the episode!!!.

Ok.. anyhow.. "back to the plot.." so how can this happen with Disk 1?

(The following includes a few assumptions about the inner workings of DXC which, for obvious reasons, have not been fully clarified or confirmed by 321)

In theory it can't but DXC does appear to alter the IFO logic at times in order for certain DVDs so that they can be backed up successfully. In doing this.. sometimes (and thankfully its quite rare) DXC changes the default Audio Track or Subtitle for some reason.. so if you have one of these players that plays a different Audio or Subtitle track by default, you may find the movie starting with subtitles after being backed up by DXC.

(End of assumptions)

Temp Solution is to either turn them off in the DVD's Menu or try using the remote to do so as described earlier.

A more permanent solution is something Derrow has commented upon.. He is trying to work out a way by which the user can preselect the correct Audio and Subtitle tracks for each DXC backup.. so even disk 2's will play the same as disk 1's on this certain DVD players or DVDs themselves.

Sorry for the very long winded explain ation.. but its not an easy topic to cover in just a few lines...

And.. please bear in mind.. I'm no expert on IFO's or DVD Structures.. I'm just recanting that which I have read and learned over the last few months.. so what I have written above may not be strictly correct in techinal terms.. but is correct in terms of how it all works in reality!

Cheers..

Mag

Wow. But on the other end of the Totem Pole ....

I've usually got my Sony standalone plugged into a standard 21", *regular* home-type TV set. I never bother choosing the audio track. (In English, choosing 5.1 or Dolby surround wouldn't make a hoot of difference.) Sometimes, we simple folk are blessed, eh? Since I don't have a wide-screen, wall-to-wall, 5-acre hi-res viewing screen, and associated multi-channel audio setup, all DXC backups and original discs work fine with the defaults.

BTW, I bet that the *vast* majority of home dvd users today, have their players plugged into common tv sets, thru the built-in speakers et. al. (90%+ a good figure?) Probably, that's because you can buy a dvd player from your local discount emporium for under $100 - less than the cost of many dvd boxed sets.

But for the *conniseur*, (<-10%), (5%?), sure, your observations are probably very correct.

Dawg, ol' buddy.....

I wrote that reply almost 5 weeks ago. Sorry, if you had to read it three times. (I come with 'subtitles' if that would help). <gg> Or maybe you were referring to Mag-66's reply?

As to your particular problem, it would be nice to know what they are (were). I see no other post from you in this thread.

Oh.. Ok.. Simple version.

If you get no sound or wrong sound then try the following (Probably best in this order)

1) Use your remote control to change the audio track manually. (You might have to pause the movie first for this to work)

2) Use the DVD Menu to select the right Audio Soundtrack

3) Check your player isn't able to select it's own Audio track and if so, make sure it isn't selecting an Audio track for which you don't have a decoder (i.e. DTS)

4) Burn Disk 2 with the menu option. (If its only affecting Disk Two playback)

If you having similar problems with Subtitles then try the above but relating to 'Subs' instead!

Now... for somethimg else.. as there is probably nowhere else better to post this at this time.. (And I will edit it out later on.. :) )

Yes, I have been away.. busy working and it looks like that work is now coming to an end finally which means you will all have to start putting up with me again in here!

Sorry.. but thats how life is at times.. Just when you thought it was safe.... etc etc etc..

<grin>

Regards to all...

Cheers..

Sadly. the emmense workload I am currently undergoing, is preventing me from spending any time at all on the computer and so therefore, on here......

My apologises to all concerned.. but the change of jobs and the new bosses are really pressing me hard to finish off my latest project... on time for a change.

Hopefully, once this has finally been completed I will be able to spend more time here than I have been able to do so in the last couple of months...

So, regards to all.. especially the 'Mods & Bosses'... even Klingy and Lawman! <g> (Seriously... miss you guys.. and good to see you got 'promoted' LM... Much deserved..)

Hope all is going OK in CA Robert... been following the news.. looking so-so to me.. but hopefully this is just the first of several 'steps' in gaining the freedom and fair use we all wish for..

Cheers...

Thanks for the update on where you've been. We've all been missing your knowledge and good words. Nice of you to let us know you are alright. Hope your work slows down so you can rejoin us once again.

And Mag....

I was (am) a little confused about your earlier offer via PM. I'm still interested (and, frankly, flattered), that you even went so far as to give me a private log-on name and password. It's just that these things tend to confuse me (I don't know squat about newsgroups), but Nige, take your time, and I look forward to your eventual return here.

Warmest Regards,

-- Klingy --

(Klingy, Not to worry about that other 'place' as I had to take it offline due to the constraints of work here and the probs with the actual server software requiring more of my time that I can afford currently :(

I will try again in the future however, when/as time allows and then I'll let you know how to access it easily :)

Cheers...

driak,
Right now, we are having a problem getting the different subtitles. It mainly has been happening when trying to get the Dutch subtitles)

The problem has been entered into our Tracking System as a bug, and we are looking into the issue now.

Hopefully, we'll be able to have this fixed in the next release.

O.K for me it is not in playback but in the recored language and subtitles. Using DXCX I backed up Antwone Fisher. From the options menu I choose Spanish language and subtitles but what was recored was all French. I put the dvd in the burner and let it play for 5 mins. or so in Spanish and Spanish sutitles I then open DXCX and choose Spanish for both and again I got all French. Win XP home. P4 2.66ghz Sony DVD RW DW-u12A with newest fm.

Mudshark,
That is the same problem that some others are seeing as well.

It is a problem with getting just about anything other than English usually.. I think this is the first time I have heard of it getting the French instead.

I believe that this will be fixed in the next release. The release candidate that I have been using doesn’t seem to have the problem, so hopefully everyone else will have the same results.
