Hi,
I've just bought some 4xDVD from Infinity but everytime I try to burn them w/ DXC they record at 2x. I've tried w/ NERO, and he recognizes them as 4x, informs that is burning at 4x but in fact it's taking 28/30 minutes to burn an entire DVD (2x time). HAs someone experienced this kind of problem?
I Have a Sony 500ULX (firmware 2.0e) and a 2,4GHZ P4 w/512Mb RIMMS, HDs from WDigital.
Thank in advance

I am having exactly the same problem using Ritek 4x media on a Pioneer A05. Same messages from Nero. I have burned with Nero and Gear using Ritek 2x and Ritek 4x, and the burn times are identical for all.

I have also used the Ritek 4x and have gotten the same results (2x burning). Looks like I'll be bagging the 4x in favor of the 2x

i wont argue this, but thats why i dont waste my time buying 4x media, i guess its still not 100%. Plus, id rather burn at 2x, safer that way, thats the way it used to be with CD-r's, DVD's are more expensive, and i'd rather not rush the process to just lose a disc.

I think DXC limits the burn speed to help keep buffer underruns to a minimum.
Many times people will receive many buffer underruns while burning the disk that cause a wide variety of problems. These problems are greatly reduced when the burn speed is limited to 2x.

I bought some meritline 4x discs and got burn times of 10-15 minutes per disc on my pioneer A05 with the "official" pioneer 1.30 firmware. Got same results using gear and nero.

It may also be the firmware that is keeping you from burning at 4x. Many drives require a firmware update to allow it to utilize the new 4x functionality.
I know the developers were talking about reducing the burn speed, but I will need to check to see if they actually did that.

It might be a problem with mislabeld media also. I've been using Ritek 4X media. On one spindle I'll get 4X times (10-15 minutes) and on the other spindle of "4X" I'll get a 25 minute burn time.

I have been wondering how to verify that I received the proper media. I have been using Ritek G03's which are burning at 2x. I DO have the latest firmware flashed. The Ritek 4x media that I received looks exactly the same to me as the 2x media. Silver/Purple. I am told this is correct. Both have come from Meritline in plain, unmarked wrappers. Although Gear does not indicate burn speed, Nero does report 4x, but the burn time is identical for both media using Gear or Nero. Approx 22-25 minutes.
Sure has me stumped and confused. If DXC limits burn speed, how does MAbney get 10-15 min? Trying to figure out how to tell if it is DXC, my A05 or the media which cost me double $$$$.

ssart,
I am not positive that they actually did make the change to limit the speed. I will need to speak with the developers about it.
There are a few other reasons why the burn could go faster though.
It could be a small disk, or it could be a non-CSS movie. Movies that are not CSS protected will be able to be ripped much quicker than CSS protected ones. The burn may also be faster with the non-CSS movies because the files are already unencrypted.
Usually, for the burn to go that quickly, you would be looking at a 4x media or a small movie though..

My 4x, 2x, 1x and "4x that burn at 2x" Ritek discs all look identical. Palin silver on one side, purple on the other. Maybe there is a code on the inner ring but I haven't been able to find one yet (and I'm not at home right now so I can't look). I don't think that DVDXCOpy limits the burn speed (as of v1.5) since I too have burned in about 13-15 minutes. In fact I switched spindles in the middle of a backup and the second burned at the faster rate. I've also kept track of the size of the burn and of course a shorter movie burns faster, but there definately IS a difference. I also can't see the CSS/non-CSS being a factor since the movie is already decrypted before the burn, not during. Also the current spindle I'm working off of consistantly burns at a faster rate. There is definately a a problem with some Ritek discs either being manufactured wrong or sold as something they are not.

I bought one of the first Sony DRU500A's available. I burn dvd-r only. I have never had any problems with 1X writing. However, when I first tried 4X with Ritek 4X disks, the DRU would start writing at 4X, then after just a few minutes it would slow to 2X and finish the disk at 2X. There are MANY threads on this forum and on others that describe this problem. Only a few users of the DRU can successfully burn a complete disk at 4X and in most of those cases, it is only with $3 to $5 branded disks. I called Sony about this and they effectively said it is not their problem (I wont go into details of the conversation). I then wrote Sony a letter about the problem. That was over 3 months ago and they have not yet replied. Sony support is totally useless.
I then tried every combination of possible solutions that have been posted.
Master/slave on IDE
Alone on an IDE
Different ASPI layers
Every firmware update from 1.0f to 2.0
DMA/PIO
Nothing helped. I also tried the new Princo 4X dvd-r disks. Same thing happens - a few minutes of 4X burn, then 2X the remainder of the disk.
I have tried different disk lots also. Out of 200 disks, I have successfully written about 20 at FULL 4X.
This problem occurs regardless of the writing software used:
DVDXCopy
DVD Decrypter
Record Now Max
Nero
I FINALLY FOUND THE SOLUTION:
I bought a Cendyne (actually a rebadged Pioneer 105). It only does -r/w, not +r/w, but at least it actually does burn a complete 4X disk. So far I am 8 for 8 with the Riteks and 7 for 7 with the Princos. PERFECT.

I used up a full 100Pack of Ritek 4X on Dru500A. not a single problem WITH ANY App... DXC, DXCExpress, Nero, DVD Workshop. I just Ordered a 100Pack of Leda 4x, I hope I have the same luck :( they were much cheaper than Ritek, ritek's prices went up the roof.. :( first one I payed $140 for 100Pack of 4X now they want like $180... I found the Leda's for $125.

Well Im sadly/upset to inform you that my new 100Pack of Leda 4x-R Arrived, I've copied multiple items/different software/etc. IT ALL clocks it at 4x but like the starter of this threat mentioned, it takes up to 30 minutes to write the full disk which is the speed of a 2x media... I bought mine from Shop4Tech.com I will contact them right now and see if they have an explanation, I did check their compatability chart and the Sony Model is listed as being able to write at 4X (which nero and Roxio say they succesfully wrote at 4x) but it takes the length of a 2x media. if anyone has had a solution, please share. thanks!
