One thing to bear in mind, is that when playing back the movie, the DVD player will get multiple chances to correct the problem on the fly, but during a copy process, the data has to be in pristine condition. Unfortunately, writing code to get by these little problems reliably can be very tough.
If you are still having problems after trying 321Q/A's suggestion, you may want to consider dropping the $15 on one of the "disc doctor" cleaners that they sell at video game stores. while these don't do a whole lot, it may be able to buff enough of the smaller, common scratches out to allow you to make a good copy before the original is too far gone.
either that, or worst case scenario, hold onto that disc until we finish writing DVDXRescue. Then the disc will be copied as long as your drive does not spit the disc out, and will even continue with small unrecoverable errors (some work will be done to minimize the damage from these)..
Let us all know how it comes out...
